The Bodiless Lacquerware Manufactured In Fuzhou,Which Boasts Distinctive Ethnic Styles And Local Features,Has Been Known In And Outside China For Its Magnificent Colors,Light And Thin Bodies,And Ingenious Designs.
From 1898 to 1936 Fuzhou’s bodiless lacquerware won many gold prizes in the World Expos held in Panama, Paris, Tokyo and Berlin. In recent years artists have developed their skills in furbishing, designing and embossing, while at the same time they have created new techniques which combine those used in jade, stone, ivory and wood carving.
This unique craft is considered one of China’s three folk art treasures, together with Jingdezhen’s porcelain and Beijing’s cloisonne. The creation of bodiless lacquer ware begins with a clay, plastic or wooden mould, with raw lacquer used as glue. Then the “body” is wrapped in layers of ramie or silk. After the mould has dried, the body is removed and finished with polishing, delineating and embellishing.
Fuzhou’s bodiless lacquerware painting techniques have a history of more than 200 years and enjoy a similar reputation with other specialized painting techniques, including Jingtailan, a special cloisonne wrought with copper and porcelain found in Beijing and the porcelain-making techniques of Jingdezhen city found in east China’s Jiangxi province. In 2006, Fuzhou’s bodiless lacquerware painting techniques entered the list for the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
